Step 1 – Choose your Race

Step One
Pick a Race

Half Marathon Races

You may be thinking, “there’s no way I can run a Half marathon”!

That’s how Jenn and my conversation started back in 2012 over dinner and a glass of wine. Moreso, the more prominent statement of the night was, “WHY would we ever WANT to run a half marathon??” That’s 13.1 miles, and to put into terms I could understand, that’s over two HOURS of running! I had never even run over two miles in my entire life! Therefore, there’s no way we could run a half marathon… and we poured another glass of wine.

Step 2 – Book Lodging and Airfare

“Look at this half marathon,” Jenn said as she googled California half marathons. “It’s on the San Francisco bay, running along the coast. I’ll bet that’s nice running weather”. The idea of running this half marathon didn’t seem as hard as it originally sounded after a second glass of wine. Other people have run that distance, why can’t we? we continued; now letting our grandiose images of ourselves get the best of us.

We continued to research our new ambition of running and found a running series located in San Francisco. In addition to having a run nearby, this series had half marathon’s all over the United States. AND- a presumably very attractive- firefighter handed you a rose, a glass of champagne, and a tiara at the end of your race! Now after a few mere glasses of wine we were already planning,

Our goal to complete a half marathon in all 50 states!

And after that, a FULL marathon on every continent! “It couldn’t be THAT hard” we agreed, still unconcerned by the fact that we had never run more than two consecutive miles. And we registered for the race!

Step Three
Train like a Pro

Half Marathon Training Plans

The next morning my choice to sign up for a half marathon, (and several glasses of wine) came over me like a ton of bricks. What the heck did I do that for?! Now I was committed, I had paid my race entry fee, and there was no use wasting money. So I decided to start start training. I started training the same as any other novice runner would, searching the internet for hours on how to do it right!

I printed a Half Marathon Training plan, and ran my first 3 miles.

And to clarify, by “ran” I mean, sprinted in the beginning, was exhausted after half a mile, slowed down to a walk and then balanced the two with a comfortable jog. We added one mile every week to our long runs, in preparation for the 13.1 miles on the San Francisco bay.

Race day came, and with all the excitement we finished the race strong with a jumping high five across the finish line! The day after the race we were not prepared for the muscle aches. Jenn and I set up a homemade ice bath in our bathing suits; like the internet advised for healing. While we drank our carb-loaded chocolate milkshake, We then asked our most exciting and repeated question,

“What State are we running next, to complete a half marathon in all 50 states?”
